Ellen Harvelle
Ellen Harvelle comes from a long line of hunters.  Her father was one, her
brothers are one.  She is the widow of one, and the reluctant mother of
one.  She never became a hunter herself, she thinks of herself more as a
helper of hunters.

She married her husband after she met him through her brothers.  Her
brothers weren't happy about her marrying a hunter, but Ellen is known for
her tenacity.  She loved William Harvelle, and that was all there was to it.

They had a good life for a while.  Raising a young daughter and running a
roadhouse to bring money in.  That road house became a refuge for
hunters that were passing through, where they could freely trade
information and stories of their world without anyone blinking or looking at
them askance.

It was through the road house that John Winchester came into her life, and
she wished for the longest time that he never had.  He hooked up with her
husband and they went on a hunt.  John came back.  Bill didn't.  Leaving
her as a single mother and the sole owner of Harvelle's Roadhouse.
She spoke sporadically to John Winchester after a
time, about the hunt, and his own quest for the
yellow eyed demon.  Of course, John Winchester
was never known for promptly returning calls, or
even regularly checking his voice mail, and he
never got the last message she left.

But his sons, Sam and Dean, did.  After their
father's death, they came to the road house
seeking the information she had offered.  Through
Ellen, they met Jo and Ash, for better or worse.

Ellen had cared deeply for John, and that passed
onto his sons, as she took on a more maternal role,
even as she dealt with the shame and
disappointment of what Jo had done.  She has kept
Sam's secret, and continues to be an important
guide, support and portal of information.
